Parent Consultation

Having a child is a wonderful gift.  It gives our lives meaning and purpose and allows us to experience both incredible joy and an abundance of love.  But it doesn’t always feel that way.

There are times in every parent’s life when we feel exhausted and overwhelmed by our children.  We might strongly disagree with the choices they are making or react negatively to the way they are behaving.  In these moments, we are more likely to lash out in anger or to shut down and emotionally disappear.

Afterward, we often feel shame or guilt over how we handled things because all we really want is to connect deeply with our children.  These negative feelings, if left unattended, can contribute to feeling even more overwhelmed and exhausted, making it more likely that we will overreact again in the future.

As a therapist and a mother of two children, I have a deep understanding of this cycle and how easy it is to become entrapped there.  By learning the skills of mindful awareness and loving-kindness toward ourselves, we can begin to break this cycle, feel better about ourselves and create closer relationships with our children.

One of my greatest passions is helping fellow parents to feel increasingly calm, competent and empowered doing one of the most difficult, yet rewarding jobs imaginable.

In our work together, I can help you to:

  • Prevent overreactions in the future by identifying what pushes your buttons.
  • Develop new skills to manage stress and tolerate difficult feelings.
  • Repair with your child to re-establish close connections.
  • Explore how early childhood experiences influence present-day relationships.
  • Re-evaluate the expectations you place on yourself as a parent.
  • Share your experience in a caring and supportive environment.
  • Incorporate new daily practices that improve self-awareness and increase self-compassion.
  • Make more room in your life for love, laughter and play
